The Stand WATCH ALONG this weekend!
We're watching Episode 1 of the original 4-part miniseries
Okay, Slow Readers, we’ve been diligently making our way through The Stand, and it’s finally time to put some visuals to it.
There have been a few versions of the The Stand (including one that came out during the Covid-19 pandemic), but we wanted to throw it back to the original 1994 miniseries version.
This was a 4-part series that aired on ABC in May of 1994. It was written by King himself (after many years of stops and starts and reroutes) and directed by Mick Garris. It was nominated for 6 Emmys, including Outstanding Miniseries.
Although the miniseries came out after the expanded version was published, it is based on the original 1978 novel.
A few fun facts:
🐦⬛ They shot the Boulder scenes in Salt Lake City after Colorado nullified gay rights laws and the production team refused to film there in protest
🐦⬛ All 4 parts were viewed by approximately 19 million homes
🐦⬛ The budget was $26million total (roughly $6.5 million an episode)
We are only going to watch the first episode of this miniseries, so as not to have any spoilers for the Slow Read.
You can buy/rent this episode through amazon prime or Apple TV (make sure you that you get the ad-free version.)
These watch alongs together are SO fun. (I do them for Stephen King Summer every year.)
Here’s how a watch along works:
Buy/rent the episode and have it queued up and ready to go at the appointed time.
Log in to the zoom using another screen (usually people watch the show on their televisions and have a laptop or iPad as their zoom screen, because it’s easier to use the chat that way). Zoom info is below
We’ll say hello to one another on the zoom and then mute ourselves (but keep our cameras on) and all press play at the same time
Throughout the viewing we’ll use the zoom chat for our commentary (but it’s also fun to see our faces on the zoom screens - especially for scary stuff)
I know the two screens seems a little awkward in theory - but trust me!
